We've written before about the mathematical prowess of SIS Grade 12 student Yebum Choi. There is more great news, as he has qualified for the Swedish International Mathematics Olympiad team. He is the very first SIS student to achieve this huge accomplishment, and is one of only 6 in all of Sweden to make this team!
The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is the World Championship Mathematics Competition for High School students and is held annually in a different country. The first IMO was held in 1959 in Romania, with 7 countries participating. It has gradually expanded to over 100 countries from 5 continents. The IMO Board ensures that the competition takes place each year and that each host country observes the regulations and traditions of the IMO.
ASwedish participant needs first to participate in the Swedish national Maths Olympiad (Skolornas Matematiktävling). Upon initially participating in the competition in 10th grade, Yebum qualified for the National finals in Grade 11 (as the Top 30 in Sweden). He was then invited to participate in the Nordic Math contest and IMO Training camp. However, he did not qualify for the IMO team.
Now in 12th grade, Yebum participated in the same place, but in November, he was able to participate in the Baltic Way Math olympiad representing Sweden. Upon improving his performance, he has now been selected to represent Sweden in the International Maths Olympiad.
Congratulations to Yebum, we're rooting for you!
