Model UN at SIS has followed a Football World Cup theme since enrichment kicked off in August. The 65-strong student body was briefed that Saudi Arabia, the intended host for the 2034 FIFA World Cup (for men), had been stripped of this privilege due to the tensions in the Middle East. The students were assigned relevant football-playing countries and tasked with creating a country profile for their designated country and then writing a formal, handwritten official bid to host the 2034 FWC, following specific guidelines and instructions. Once this was completed, the delegates had to then write a 60–90-second opening address representing their country's case and deliver this speech.
The speeches were held and run according to the official MUN procedure, chaired by various grade 9 and 10 students over two Tuesday enrichment sessions. The procedures, terminology, and protocols always prove to be the 'next-level' for the new or less experienced Model UN students – this is how they learn! There were some great, authentic pitches made by various countries, and some even more impressive and astute POIs (points of inquiry) where delegations in the assembly can challenge the speaker!
Now, the focus shifts from the FWC 2034 to SISMUN 2027, where the enrichment students will receive their new countries and committees and begin preparing for this conference that SIS will host at the end of January 2027. Malene Schmidt and her team of students making up the DP MUN board have got 5 international schools signed up already for January, in addition to the regular local schools that attend.
We wish Mr Logan good luck with the students he is taking to Zurich to participate in Montana MUN at the end of October, in addition to Ms Shearman, Ms Schmidt, and Mr Kim, who will be taking 16 grade 8–10 students to Milan in the middle of November for the 11th ASMMUN.
