SIS is a Positive Discipline Lab School, and our teachers train to use it in the classroom. This expertise is also freely shared with parents and guardians in the School. A group of parents came together earlier this month to take part in a Phase 1 Positive Disciple workshop led by SIS teachers and trained practitioners Cathy McNulty and Floor ten Haaf-Moore.
Positive Discipline is a respectful, teaching-based approach to guiding children’s behaviour. It combines kindness and firmness, emphasising connection, communication, and understanding the reasons behind a child's conduct. Instead of rewards or punishment, it uses encouragement, problem-solving, and logical consequences to build responsibility and self-discipline. Parents and educators model respect and empathy, focusing on solutions rather than blame. Mistakes are treated as learning opportunities, helping children develop self-regulation and intrinsic motivation. By fostering belonging, cooperation, and mutual respect, positive discipline nurtures capable, confident, and compassionate individuals who behave well because they understand and value good behaviour.
The next session is the Phase 2 workshop on Saturday, 8th November at 9:30am-4:00pm. Spaces are still available so please sign up now if you would like to participate. Register here: Positive Discipline Phase 2 (8th November 2025)
For those who missed the Phase 1 workshop, the next opportunity is on Saturday, 22nd November at 9:30am-4:00pm. Register here: Positive Discipline Phase 1 (22nd November 2025.
