A milestone for SIS

SIS celebrates its 75th anniversary this year, but it's also looking to the future.

School Life

Before online learning became commonplace (1990s), before Sesame Street was first broadcast (1969), before the IB was created (1968), and decades before any other English-language international school opened its doors in Stockholm, Stockholm International School was preparing students for a rapidly changing world.

Elvis, the Beatles, Apollo, Concord, colour television, desktop computing: what those first students experienced in their lifetime marked social and technological change at a pace previously unknown. Throughout, SIS has grown, adapted, progressed, and served a burgeoning international community in the city.

Reaching 75 years is a remarkable milestone for any school. It represents far more than the passing of time. It is a moment to pause, reflect, and celebrate the people, ideas, and achievements that have shaped the school across generations.

For an international school, that journey is particularly meaningful. Over 75 years, thousands of students and families from around the world have passed through our doors, bringing different languages, cultures, experiences, and perspectives. Each has added something to the character of our community, while our teachers and staff have helped generations of young people discover their strengths, develop their curiosity, and prepare for lives beyond school. Those students who have gone on to universities, careers and lives around the world carry something of the SIS experience – and SIS values – with them. Their achievements are part of our shared story.

But our anniversary will not just be about looking backwards. Seventy-five years provides a strong foundation from which to look forward with confidence and ambition. That’s why our theme for the year is ‘A legacy of learning. Inspiring the future’. The world our students will inherit is, once again, changing rapidly, creating new challenges and opportunities for education. Our task is to ensure that today's students have the knowledge, skills, and confidence to shape that future.

SIS will be marking this anniversary in a number of ways throughout the year. The highlight will be our 75th Anniversary Gala in November. That will celebrate how far we have come – and, perhaps the most exciting part, look forward to what comes next. We’ll be inviting you to join the party, and invest in the students of today who are the authors of our next chapter — and we look forward to seeing what they achieve.

Look out for more information about the Gala and other celebrations in the coming weeks.
