Lennart Linner, a former Ambassador of Sweden to Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Philippines, and Indonesia, addressed SIS MUN students this month. He shared his insights on diplomacy and the practice of managing international relations through dialogue, negotiation, and compromise, and as a fundamental tool by which states pursue their national interests, resolve disputes, build alliances, and promote peace and stability.

Mr. Linner, who has held diplomatic postings in Ukraine, China, Afghanistan, and Iran, alongside his broader responsibilities as a Swedish ambassador, spoke with remarkable elegance and authenticity to students from Grades 7 to 10. From our initial correspondence over email, to phone conversations while arranging the visit, and finally meeting him in person, Mr. Linner consistently demonstrated patience, warmth, intelligence, and respect. He generously gave his time to our MUN staff, a few attending parents, and, most importantly, to the students of the Model UN enrichment club.

From L - R: Marie Linner, Lilian Willix-Schwirtz (parent), Emily Brunt (MUN teacher), Margit McLaughlin (MUN teacher), Mr Lennart Linner, Sean Logan (MUN Coordinator) and Stefan Schwirtz (parent).

These admirable qualities were evident as he shared insights into his diverse roles and responsibilities as an ambassador and diplomat across various global contexts. His stories were both enlightening and thought-provoking.

What stood out most for me was the way Mr. Linner responded to the many questions posed by our MUN students. This was with grace, honesty, and composure. He served as an inspiring example of how diplomacy, when paired with elegance and clarity, can make even the most complex messages resonate.

Our MUN students derived an enormous benefit through interacting with a professional who has served his country far and wide in the name of diplomacy. They gained insights into all the duties, roles, and responsibilities that come with working abroad for an embassy, which I am positive some of our students will experience one day!
