Happy Birthday, Norra Latin!

145 years ago, 3 September 1880, saw the inauguration of Norra Latin as a school – Högre Latinläroverket å Norrmalm – in the presence of King Oscar II and Crown Prince Eugen. After the school closed in 1982, the building was repurposed as a conference center. In 2023, Norra Latin underwent renovations and was re-inaugurated as a new campus for Stockholm International School (SIS).

The exterior of the building may not have changed a lot, but inside it's a different story. The original school taught only boys. Now, it's not only open to boys and girls, but it welcomes 65 different nationalities too. While SIS has retained the original fabric of the building – even restoring elements of the original colour scheme – this has been overlaid with contemporary measures to control sound, air quality, lighting, and all the regulatory compliance required of a modern state-of-the-art school building. Gym classes look a lot different now, and science labs with digital technology give students learning opportunities way beyond the classical emphasis of the original school.

SIS is proud to be the custodian of Norra Latin's history and heritage, and even more so to be trusted with preparing our 800 students for tomorrow's world.
