The Swedish Chess Federation has recently recognised SIS as official ambassadors for Swedish chess through its 'diplomering' process. A school certified through this process becomes a strategic chess partner to the Swedish Chess Federation and the relevant district, and can expect increased support and commitment from the federation. This can include, for example:

  • Strengthened dialogue and deeper relationship with chess representatives
  • Support with training in chess by teachers/leaders at the school
  • The school may be able to apply to be the organiser of certain competitions, such as the school team championships
  • The association can offer students some extra chess training

Confirming the nomination, the Swedish Chess Federation commented, 'The Stockholm Chess Federation has nominated Stockholm International School to become a certified school, and we at the Swedish Chess Federation can only agree that the school truly deserves it, given the chess efforts made at the school and successes, including within Schackfyran.'

The recognition is a reward for the enormous efforts of SIS staff, particularly Ms Katalin Pongo and Mr Ryan Kingsley. They have promoted the game tirelessly since receiving an award from the SIS Spirit Fund to 'kick start' their efforts to increase student participation for the recreational and intellectual benefits that come with playing the game.
