SIS is proud to have been recongnised by the Swedish Chess Federation as 'a prolific ambassador' for the game, and as an important strategic partner for the national and local federation bodies.
A Diploma was presented to David Osler, the SIS Interim Director, in the presence of the game's leading advocates in the School, Ms Katalin Pongo and Mr Ryan Kingsley. They have driven participation in chess to unprecedented levels at SIS over the last few years, to a point where around 1 in 10 students play the game regularly. As well as supporting our own students, the pair have been busy organising tournaments more widely to include other schools, and managing SIS participation in local and regional tournaments.
SIS players, individuals and teams, have had considerable success in competition, its not just about the game itself. Participation has a social and confidence-building impact among students who find friendships, conversation, and inclusion from either side of the board.
Later this month, SIS will once again host a Junior Grand Prix tournament, welcoming around 200 students from other institutions - and their families – into Norra Latin, making our players and their mentors not only great ambassadors for the game, but for our School too.
