Building our parent community

Our parent community – the SPC – offers fun and support for our entire community

Bowling was a blast at our first All-Community Parents event held on Tuesday, September 23rd at Lucky Bowl Svea! “We wanted to try a fun activity to get everyone excited. Bowling is something that is interactive, not that hard - and always a good laugh!” said Eva Pentti-Kortman, SPC’s new VP All-School Community.

Over the years, the SPC has made its mission to support the entire SIS Community. Each year our volunteer board is responsible for organising student dances and activities, family events like our amazing International Day - and we help the community support and celebrate SIS Teachers and Staff! This year we wanted to add to that by making our commitment specifically to the parent community even stronger.

“We’ve always had great ideas for getting parents together in more fun ways - with After Work get-togethers or even informative networking events and talks - but without someone dedicated to making these events happen, it has been hard to get them off the ground consistently.” said SPC Board President Pia Astrom. The solution, add a new person to the board dedicated to helping organise activities and build these connections. This year, that person is Eva!

“This is my second year on the SPC Board, and I have been a room/grade parent as well over the years.” Eva explained. “Each year we get feedback that we should do more fun things for the parents - especially reaching those who can’t always make daytime events like the Classlist clubs. It’s something the board always starts out the year wanting to do, but with so many other things already happening, it’s easy to have these ideas fall away. I’m excited to have the time to try out some different events to see what works best for the community!”

The SPC has several activities planned for the fall:
Bowling Night, September 23rd
After Work, October 7th
General “Wellness” Meet-up: Meet the Counselors, November 12
Holiday Event, Dec 11th

Additionally, Eva will focus her time on adding some community interest value to the General Coffee Morning Meet-Ups - with special guests at each, focusing on topics like wellbeing and technology. Finally, she’ll be working to maximize the use of Classlist for the SIS Community.

“We really hope having one person on the board dedicated to the parents will help bring us all together for support - and a little more fun!” added Pia.
