As the new term gets into its stride at SIS, so too does Emily Brunt, the new MYP (IB Middle Years Programme) Coordinator. Originally from Canada, Emily brings a wealth of international experience, having taught science in Dubai, Japan, and Hungary. She arrived at SIS just over 18 months ago, having specifically sought out employment options at European schools.
'SIS felt right to me when I heard of the opportunity to teach science here. I wanted a change of climate and routine from working in the UAE, and Sweden seemed to offer that. The attitude to work-life balance and the emphasis on nature really appealed.' With SIS specifically, inclusivity was also appealing to Emily. Aiming to release the potential of every student, not just high academic achievers, was also a deciding factor. 'I was also impressed that SIS has such an extablished reputation, and such a stable faculty, in contrast to many international schools who have a high turnover of staff.'
In her new role, Emily will be taking a close look at how SIS delivers the MYP—exploring innovative approaches, refining our practice, and asking how we can enhance the student experience. She will have a remit in teaching the teachers, creating an environment where knowledge and best practice is shared, and implemented in the classroom. It's coordinating colleagues as well as curriculum details.
Emily will also be keeping a close eye on upcoming IB developments, supporting our teachers with the latest programme updates and ensuring our lessons remain engaging, challenging, and effective. 'We know the IB has programme modifications in the pipeline that will impact the MYP, and we are all keen to know about them. I'll be aiming to weave new approaches into what we do as soon as possble, so that we have a steady progression towards the updated programme which we expect to benefit students and staff.'
Alongside these responsibilities, Emily will continue teaching in the classroom—making for a busy and exciting start to the term for her. And it doesn't promise to be any less busy in the future. Next year SIS will go through accreditation assessment once again as part of the IB's normal cycle of review.
It’s dedicated and energetic educators like Emily who are central to the excellence and innovation we’re so proud of at SIS, and who make such an impact on the lives and learning of our students.
