What connects an Australian didgeridoo with a Nepalese school, and Indian spices? Here’s a clue: look to the work of our students.
For evidence of the great international mix at SIS and the global awareness of our students, their personal projects take some beating. This month saw the MYP Personal Project Exhibition take place, themed Inquiry Unleashed.
The exhibition showcased how Grade 10 students have used inquiry to develop and create their personal projects. Visitors had the opportunity to engage with students to learn how exploration, research, and experimentation informed the development of their final products. Subjects covered everything from nutrition for athletes and marathon running, to creative activities such as pottery and the writing of a dystopian short story about the use of generative AI. Science and arts sat (literally) beside each other as the students showcased their interests and talents.
And our global examples? Karl Marshall made and decorated a didgeridoo, researching the crafting methods and aboriginal decoration of the instrument. Annika Lubin poured her dedication to the Nepal Project into compiling, printing, and binding a book about the project. And Sofia Glader explored and expressed the Indian side of her identity by creating a painting using pigments made from traditional Indian spices and calling upon traditional mandala designs for inspiration.
Visitors to the exhibition could not fail to be impressed by the enthusiasm of the students and the rich variety of projects on offer – a testament to the staff and supportive culture at SIS, and to the cross-discipline learning possibilities within the IB programmes we offer.
