A different approach for MUN

School Life

The conference theme, Dare to Make a Difference, was fitting for our 20 SIS students from grades 7-10. They left a lasting impact on both OPOMUN and the city of Porto, returning home inspired!

Hosted by Oporto International School, OPOMUN welcomed us warmly upon arrival at Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport. Stepping onto campus for registration and the opening ceremony, we were immediately swept into a whirlwind of engagement that carried through to the closing ceremony at Porto Palácio Hotel. Witnessing our students confidently network, debate, and engage in committee sessions was a proud moment, showcasing their confidence, empathy, and global awareness.

OPOMUN followed a clause-by-clause debating style, differing from both our recent SISMUN and last November’s BERMUN conference. Adapting to these varying formats keeps the MUN experience dynamic! With 20 students spread across all committees except the ICJ, we, the three attending teachers, heard firsthand accounts of debates and resolutions in the Security Council, ECOSOC, Human Rights, WHO, DISEC, and UNODC. The exposure to different UN bodies deepened students' understanding of diplomacy and international relations.

Balancing work and leisure, we explored Porto on foot, enjoyed exceptional food, and some students even braved the Atlantic’s fresh waters. Strong bonds formed over breakfast conversations, bus rides, and post-session debriefs, reflecting the camaraderie built on this trip.
A special thanks to MUN staff, Ms. Emily Brunt and Ms. Margit McLaughlin, for their dedication. Planning for the MUN enrichment program continued, with exciting ideas brewing for 2025/26.

What the students said:

Roshan Shah (DISEC, Sri Lanka), Grade 9:
OPOMUN was great. It wasn't the most organized nor the best debate, but it was fun. I had a good time with my friends and debated interesting topics. I spoke quite a bit and argued with people from around the world. The venues were incredible, debating in a hotel was cool, and exploring the city made it even better.

JohnJohn Nevado (WHO, Sri Lanka), Grade 8:
OPOMUN was one of the best school trips I’ve been on. The conference was different from SIS but still fun. Only debating resolution clauses was an interesting take and made for a more detailed resolution. The hotel and food were great, and the people made it even better. I hope to participate again next year or in something similar.

Leopold (DISEC, Paraguay), Grade 9:
OPOMUN was unforgettable. Debating cyber warfare was both cool and hard, pushing me to think in new ways. I met amazing people, engaged in tough but fun discussions, and immersed myself in the atmosphere. Whether in committee, exploring the venue or Porto, or just chilling during breaks, every moment added to the experience. I’d love to do it again!

Lisa (UN DAC, New Zealand), Grade 10:
OPOMUN was the best trip I’ve been on. As my first real MUN, I had no expectations but learned so much. Debating, meeting new people, and exploring Portugal made it incredible. The conference helped me realize my passion for international relations and set future goals. The friendships formed made it even more special. Thank you, Ms. McLaughlin, Mr. Logan, and Ms. Brunt—it was truly life-changing!

Victoria (UN DAC, North Korea), Grade 10:
OPOMUN was one of the most impactful trips I’ve had. Adjusting to a new debate format was challenging, but the supportive community encouraged us to speak and grow. The welcoming atmosphere, school, hotel, and culture made it unforgettable. Beyond the debates, the friendships formed and late-night laughs will stay with me forever. The OPOMUN board created an amazing, well-organized conference I’ll always cherish!
